Yesterday, our Year 10 cohort spent the day with the team from Coast Shelter as part of the LOVE BiTES annual program. The facilitators delivered part of the PDHPE syllabus on Respectful Relationships. This is a national program that focuses on teaching young people about respectful relationships, consent, and the prevention of domestic and family violence and has been running on the Central Coast of New South Wales since 2008. It delves into topics such as relationship boundaries, communication, gender stereotypes, and healthy conflict resolution. It emphasises the importance of consent and understanding what constitutes a healthy relationship in a way that our Year 10 students are able to engage with.

There was also a special acknowledgement and presentation for Charlotte, currently inYear 11. After participating in last year’s event, she created a painting for the LOVE BiTES Art competition and won a People’s Choice Award.

Both LOVE BiTES and MCC aim to empower our young people to recognise signs of relationship violence and take action to prevent it.

Mark Taylor Shield Cricket /mark-taylor-shield-cricket/ Mon, 25 Mar 2024 22:41:11 +0000 /?p=17627 On Monday, 25 March, in the latest Mark Taylor Shield Cricket fixture, MacKillop faced off against St John Fisher in a close encounter. Opting to bat first, St John Fisher posted a formidable total of 177, setting a challenging target for us. However, our bowlers showcased their skill and determination, with Lochie, Jacob, Victor, and Adam all contributing with crucial wickets. Supported by a solid fielding effort from the rest of the team, MacKillop demonstrated resilience and teamwork throughout the match.

Although our run chase began with a shaky start, we displayed determination with the bat, forging promising partnerships along the way. Lochie and Adam, retiring unbeaten after scoring 30 runs each, showcased their batting prowess, complemented by Oliver’s commendable captain’s innings, adding 21 runs to the total. Despite our efforts, MacKillop fell short, managing 145 runs in our allotted 30 overs.

Congratulations to St John Fisher for their well-deserved victory and progression to the next stage of the competition. Well done to all MacKillop players for their unwavering enthusiasm and sportsmanship on the field and enjoying the day.

]]> Pathways in Business – KPMG Barangaroo /pathways-in-business-kpmg-barangaroo/ Tue, 12 Mar 2024 05:54:29 +0000 /?p=17552

On Thursday, 7 March, MCC’s Year 12 Business Services class visited international firm KPMG’s offices in Barangaroo, Sydney, to see a real-world practical application of several HSC units they are studying this year. This amazing opportunity was organised via CSBB Pathways and Partnerships.

Students were taken on an office tour of the International Building and learnt about some sustainable practices the building employs, such as an underground maggot farm to reduce food waste and the use of water from Sydney Harbour to run the air conditioning in the building. We learnt about the organisational structure of KPMG and how their Wellbeing and Inclusion policies and procedures assist their diverse workforce to have the opportunity to succeed.

We were lucky enough to attend an International Women’s Day event, where the students were exposed to an international panel of women leaders, including Michelle Bullock, the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia.

This excursion gave Year 12 students a practical application of the theoretical content learnt in classes, and they can use this experience as a case study in their upcoming Business Services Trial and HSC examinations.

Fr. Philip presided over the Mass and blessed this cohort for the year ahead.

With the presentation of their senior badges came the solemn pledge, a testament to their growth and readiness to embrace the responsibilities of being a senior student at MCC. It is a tradition that marks their journey towards maturity and a deeper understanding of their faith.

The students gathered for the Senior Luncheon—a joyous celebration of accomplishment and aspiration. Among the esteemed guests were our new College Principal, Mrs Tanya Appleby, and distinguished speakers Mrs Deb Ferguson, former Principal of Secondary College, Stephanie K College Dux and Gabrielle B, a College alumnus.

Gabrielle, shared her own post-school journey, instilling in our students a sense of determination to always strive for excellence. Stephanie imparted invaluable advice on navigating the challenges of the HSC with balance, discipline, and nurturing relationships with your teachers, peers and family, who will guide you through this time.

Furthermore, as we applauded our high achievers and those who secured top honours in the diocese of Broken Bay, we glimpsed into the future, witnessing the aspirations and dreams that will shape the year ahead. It was a testament to the spirit of resilience and ambition that thrives within our community.

In every speech, every shared ambition, and every heartfelt exchange, the essence of our school’s ethos shone brightly—the unwavering commitment to fostering not just academic success but holistic growth and fulfilment.

Indeed, it was more than just a gathering; it was a celebration of faith, achievement, and the boundless potential that lies within each and every one of our students.

Junior Theatre Festival 2023 Newcastle /junior-theatre-festival-2023-newcastle/ Tue, 31 Oct 2023 02:33:51 +0000 /?p=16845 MCC STUDENTS WIN NATIONAL AWARDS AT 2023 JUNIOR THEATRE FESTIVAL

Our Primary and Secondary students won 2 group awards for Outstanding Acting at the 2023 Junior Theatre Festival Australia, which was presented in Newcastle on October 27 & 28. Students presented selections from Disney’s Frozen JR. and The Lion King Kids, for leading musical theatre personalities from the USA.

We are incredibly proud of Lilly C and Caitlyn D from secondary and Ella G from primary, for being a part of the pilot performance of Between the Lines. These students participated in a week long workshop process in order to stage an hour long performance this evening.

On Saturday, 28 October, 24 finalist groups from all states in Australia as well as a group from New Zealand, competed in person for the prestigious awards that are judged by a panel of international visiting artists from Broadway and West End.

Junior Theatre Festival allows students and teachers representing a diverse number of theatre programs to come together to share their talents, cheer each other on, and be part of an international community of people who care as much about the art form as they do.

The event is part of the global Junior Theatre Festivals circuit, conceived by iTheatrics in New York, which takes place in the USA, UK, Australia and New Zealand. A “rousing celebration of theatre” (), the Junior Theatre Festivals are the world’s largest events exclusively dedicated to celebrating young people and student-driven musical theatre. In 2022, nearly 20,000 people worldwide attended a Junior Theatre Festival.

“Each of the student participants had the unique opportunity to receive tips from some of the world’s best producers, directors and writers who joined us from New York,” said Junior Theatre Festival (JTF) co-producer Shane Bransdon.

“As a major treat, the students got to meet celebrity performer Rob Mills, who is currently touring with the hit musical “&Juliet”.

The Junior Theatre Festival Australia 2023 would not be possible without generous funding grants from Music Theatre International (MTI) and the City of Newcastle. Stuart Hendricks from MTI commended the JTF Australia team on their monumental pivoting efforts to deliver the event.

“Around the world, Junior Theatre Festivals offer young people the opportunity to bond with their peers in an immersive celebration of the art form they love,” said Mr Hendricks. “MTI is committed to promoting the value of theatre in education and giving performers additional opportunities to demonstrate their talents and to support and learn from each other.”

Participating in this year’s Junior Theatre Festival were Daniel J Mertzlufft, Broadway composer and tiktok influencer; Ryan Macauley, West End Musical Director; Vidya Makan, performer from SIX the musical; Stuart Hendricks, Managing Director of MTI Australasia; Founder of Jeter Backyard Theatre (Pennsylvania), and many more.

First Holy Communion /first-holy-communion/ Thu, 28 Sep 2023 04:54:23 +0000 /?p=16825 Over the past five weeks, students have been gathering on a Sunday to complete the sacramental program of First Holy Communion. Brother Shayne, Mr Snelling, Miss Owen, along with teachers and parishioners, have volunteered their time to teach the students about how to receive the Host and also why it is such a significant sacrament in our Catholic Church.

On Sunday, these children from Years 4, 5, 6 and 7 made their First Holy Communion at St. Mary MacKillop of the Cross parish. With a few nerves but brilliant smiles. The children, witnessed by their families and friends, came to receive the Eucharist – the Body of Christ, from Father Philip in a beautiful service. The children were also given a special certificate and badge to remember this special day.

A huge thank you goes to all the parents who supported this sacramental program by

bringing your child to weekly classes, Reconciliation and dressing them beautifully for the day.

Congratulations children, on receiving your First Holy Communion!
